Poseidon system assists lifeguard to save life at public pool
21 April, 2013

The Poseidon computer-aided drowning detection system has proven its life-saving capabilities after assisting lifeguards in successfully rescuing a young man at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens. The system, which serves as a lifeguard’s “third eye”, was instrumental in saving the life of a swimmer who suffered an epileptic seizure in the pool.
Poseidon spokesperson Troy Green explained the system’s impact: “This boy appeared to be in trouble, and within seconds, the alarm alerted lifeguards to the situation”. This quick response allowed lifeguards to reach him promptly and prevent a tragic outcome.
The Poseidon system uses specialised overhead and underwater cameras to track swimmers’ movements, allowing staff to detect and respond to emergencies in real time.
“Timely intervention is critical; anything over 30 seconds can result in hypoxic brain injury”, Mr Green noted.
Video footage from the incident shows the young man, in his 20s, sinking to the bottom of the pool and remaining motionless just moments after diving in. The Poseidon system quickly alerted lifeguards, who swiftly retrieved him from the water. Thanks to their rapid response, he recovered poolside.
Blacktown Leisure Centre is the only pool in Australia equipped with the Poseidon system, though it has been adopted by over 220 facilities across Europe, the USA, and Japan.
